impasto oil figure painting of Ophelia from Hamlet by Shakespeare

ophelia / oil on canvas + digital / theatre poster illustration

Illustration for a theatre production based on an interpretation of Hamlet. This (fictional) adaptation acknowledges the subtext that she is pregnant. As death by rue poisoning would have been very painful, I wanted to capture the physicality of discomfort through clenching and contortion of the figure. A narrow canvas was chosen for a constricting, almost claustrophobic frame of the scene.
